At Nanaimo United, we aim to create the ultimate supportive and positive environment for all our female athletes and this spring, our BCPL women’s team got the chance to work with a special, female-forward gear sponsor. Meet Athleticus Research: a sports apparel company based out of Vancouver designing leak-proof activewear for women. Their mission:

Our apparel is made for movement without limits—leakproof, distraction-free, and engineered to keep up with everything you bring to the game. You’ve always been ready. The gear just hadn’t caught up. Until now.

“1 in 2 girls drop out of sport due to period-related challenges, and we’re here to change that,” Athleticus co-founder Christine Park wrote to us. “We develop leakproof underwear and activewear with professional athletes to meet the unique demands of the female body in motion. Through our #girlsinmotion initiative, we empower girls with the gear and confidence to stay in the game.”

Check out the initiative here. Can you spot the NUFC logo on their website?!

"I'm super excited about our partnership with Athleticus Research because of their commitment to supporting female athletes and breaking down barriers to keep girls in sport,” expressed women’s keeper Kaiden Thorpe.

It's great to see organizations investing in female athletes and helping create more opportunities, resources, and confidence for athletes at all levels! A brand like Athleticus Research is so important. They’re really bringing awareness to one of the many barriers female athletes face and are definitely making the subject of menstruation less taboo.

I’ve been fortunate enough throughout my studies at VIU in Kinesiology to really spend time learning and researching the female athlete from a physiological perspective. Through a course I have taken through the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences, I had the opportunity to research how the menstrual cycle affects female athletes specifically when it comes to injuries. It was interesting to see that there actually is very limited research that has been conducted on this topic, and even just female athletes in general. However, it has been shown that throughout different phases of the menstrual cycle, there are times when female athletes are more likely to obtain injuries. Although which phase is still up for debate due to lack of research.

I am super excited about this partnership and I cannot wait to see what it grows into!

15 of our athletes were keen to try out Athleticus’ products and each of them were sent a special period-care bundle. Thank you, Athleticus, for your support!
